Essential Winter Skincare Tips for Healthy Skin
Winter's arrived and now your skin's all, "Hey, did you forget about me?" It's cold outside. You're transitioning from warm heat, cold scaly cheeks, dry mouth. I've woken up some mornings in the mirror, swearing, "No way, not again!" But the thing is—it's perfectly normal. Winter skin is a bit quirky, a bit finicky, but with a little tweaking, it repays you one hundred times over.
Why Your Skin is Grumpy This Winter
Dry air on the inside, nippy wind, warmth. Dehydration happens to everything. Your skin was already head of the game anyway, new skin cells overwhelming the party, oils just not quite doing the trick. What does it bring about? Tight, flaky, possibly pale or white-appearing skin. Don't worry though—some simple cures will have it humming right along.
Winter Skincare Mistakes We All Guiltily Make
- Summer Moisturizing: Summer moisturizers which come in tiny tiny sizes just won't do. Moisturizing needs an upgrade!
- Scalding showers: Pleasant and cozy, perhaps—but they're removing the oil from off your skin, drying it out, puckering it into cranky. Lukewarm is the answer.
- Unapplied sunblock: Clouds won't take in UVs, snow is reflective. SPF does protect though.
- Over-exfoliating: Your skin is stressed enough already; twice-weeklys should suffice.
- Slipping on hydration: Windblown dry skin spread on the snow. Drink and rehydrate with herbal tea—you're doing the skin a favor.
Skincare mindset: Preparing to go out into the cold-weather months: toner, serum, oil, moisturizer, sunscreen—wrap that face into a warm blanket.
Winter Skincare Mythbusting
- "Oily Skin Does Not Need Moisturizer": False. Your oily skin dries out during the winter months just as any skin tends to, and neglected moisturizing will one day bite you back.
- "Sunscreens are only for summer": False. Snow reflects the sun and clouds pass it on.
- "Hot water is a cleanser": Hype-but-erases oils on the skin. Lukewarm is best.
- "Exfoliating right away removes flakes": Do not. It strips away protection.
- "Drinking water does nothing": It does. Drink water.
Products That Make You Want to Put Blankets on Your Body
- Hyaluronic acid: Provides the hydrated feeling of a warm cup of tea on your skin.
- Ceramides: Mends the barrier and hydrates
- Squalane: Hydrating light oil that blends and will not clog.
- Shea butter: Dry, stubborn spot magic.
Serums: Little Tiny Love Letters to Your Own Skin
- Dryness: Serums containing hyaluronic acid
- Dullness: Enlivens Vitamin C. Add in increments if sensitive.
- Redness/Irritation: Niacinamide soothes.
- Rough texture: Mandelic acid or lactic acid.
- Barrier disruption: Peptides (copper peptides particularly).
How to Use Acids in Winters
- Hyaluronic acid: Large particle remains on surface; small particle penetrates.
- AHAs: Lactic (5–10%), mandelic (5–15%), glycolic (2–5%)—use with caution
- BHAs: Salicylic (0.5–2%), betaine salicylate—spot treatment.
- PHAs: Gluconolactone, lactobionic acid—soothing exfoliating moisturizing.
Use sparingly, use sunscreen daily, top off with moisturizer.
Treatment of Common Winter Skin Disorders
- Flakes/pulling: Gentle cleanser + moisturizer + SPF.
- Sensitivity: Do not use alcohol/perfume
- Breakouts: Mild non-comedogenic moisturizers; spot treatment
- Cracks/wounds: Petroleum-type products at night
- Chapped lips: Daytime SPF balm, nighttime waxy balm.
Feed Your Skin from the Inside Out
- Hydrate: Herbal tea, water, lemon water.
- Healthy fats: Walnuts, salmon, avocado.
- Rainbow foods: Carrots—vitamin C and antioxidants, berries, spinach
- Supplements: Vitamin D or omega-3 (initial doctor visit).
Sunscreen is Not Negotiable
UV light travels through clouds and reflects off snow. Daily moisturizing SPF is a necessity.
Make Your Space Skin-Friendly
- Add humidity: 30–50% ideal. Humidifiers on travel days are worth the cost.
- Temperatures: No extreme shifts; heaters not directly in front of individual.
Developing a Winter Regimen
- Morning: wash, hydrate, SPF
- Evening: serum, cream, cleanse
Step by step over time: masks, serums, oils. Your skin will tell you what it's obsessed with—pay attention.
