You've booked your first spa appointment — or you're thinking about it. And now the questions are starting: What do I wear? Do I have to undress? Should I shave beforehand? Is it awkward? How much should I tip? Every first-timer wonders these things. Almost nobody asks out loud.
This guide covers everything you actually want to know before your first spa visit, with honest answers from the team at Juvenelle Day Spa in London, Ontario. No question is too basic. We hear them every week, and we're glad people ask.
Before You Arrive
The biggest source of first-visit anxiety is not knowing what's expected of you. Here's the short version: very little. But a few things do help the experience go smoothly.
What to Wear
Wear whatever you're comfortable in. There's no dress code. You'll change into a robe or wrap at the spa for most treatments. Loose, comfortable clothing is practical for afterward — your skin may have products on it, and you'll likely feel relaxed enough that tight clothes would be unwelcome.
Arrive 10 to 15 Minutes Early
Your first visit includes a brief intake form — skin concerns, sensitivities, any areas you'd prefer not to be touched. This takes a few minutes and helps your esthetician or therapist customise the session before it starts. Arriving early means your treatment time isn't cut short.
Grooming — Don't Overthink It
You don't need to shave, wax, exfoliate, or do anything special to your skin beforehand. Your esthetician or massage therapist works with hundreds of clients and is focused entirely on providing a good treatment, not on evaluating your grooming choices. Come as you are.
What Actually Happens During Common Treatments
Not knowing what's about to happen is the main thing that makes people nervous. Here's a plain walkthrough of the most popular first-timer treatments.
Facials
You lie on a cushioned treatment bed, fully clothed from the neck down (or wrapped in a robe). Your esthetician cleanses your face, then works through a series of steps — exfoliation, extraction if needed, serum application, mask, moisturiser. Each step is explained as it happens. The whole thing takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on the facial type, and most of it feels deeply relaxing.
Massage
You undress to your comfort level. You're always covered with a sheet, and only the area being worked on is exposed at any time. If you prefer to keep undergarments on, that's completely fine — your therapist works around it. The room is warm, the lighting is low, and you control the pressure by speaking up. "A little lighter" or "you can go deeper there" are the most useful phrases in a massage session.
Waxing
Waxing is quick and professional. Your esthetician has done this hundreds of times, maintains strict hygiene standards, and works efficiently. For a first Brazilian or bikini wax, the whole process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It's uncomfortable — there's no point pretending otherwise — but it's brief, and most clients say the anticipation was worse than the actual experience.
Pedicure
You sit in a chair, soak your feet, and your nail technician trims, shapes, exfoliates, and moisturises. No one is judging your feet. Seriously. Estheticians have seen every possible foot condition. A regular pedicure is about foot health as much as appearance, and it's one of the most relaxing treatments you can book.
Questions You're Allowed to Ask
All of them. There's no question that's too basic or too personal for your esthetician or therapist. Here are the ones we hear most often from first-time clients:
- "Can I talk during the treatment, or should I be quiet?" — Entirely up to you. Some clients chat throughout. Others close their eyes and drift off. Both are completely normal. Your therapist follows your lead.
- "What if I fall asleep?" — It happens regularly, and we take it as a compliment. Your therapist will gently let you know when the session is over.
- "What if I need to use the bathroom mid-treatment?" — Just say so. Your therapist will step out. It's not awkward; it's human.
- "Can I ask for more or less pressure?" — Please do. A good massage is one that's calibrated to what your body needs, and only you can provide that feedback.
- "What products are you using on me?" — Ask anytime. Your esthetician can walk you through every product and ingredient. If you have sensitivities or allergies, mention them on your intake form and verbally before the treatment starts.
How to Choose Your First Treatment
If you're not sure what to book, here's a simple framework:
| If You Want... | Book This |
|---|---|
| Pure relaxation and stress relief | Relaxation massage (60 min) |
| Healthier, clearer skin | Custom facial (60 min) |
| A bit of everything | Spa package (combines treatments) |
| Something quick and low-commitment | Express facial or pedicure (30 min) |
| To go with a friend or partner | Couples massage |

After Your Treatment
Drink water. Your body processes the products and metabolic waste released during massage and facials more easily when you're hydrated. Avoid intense exercise for the rest of the day if you've had a massage — your muscles are in recovery mode and respond better to rest.
If you had a facial, your esthetician will give you specific aftercare instructions. The general rule: keep your routine gentle for 24 hours. No harsh exfoliants, no retinol, and wear SPF if you're heading outside.
As for tipping — it's appreciated but never expected. The standard in Ontario is 15 to 20 percent of the treatment cost, similar to a restaurant. You can add it when you pay at reception.
Everyone Was a First-Timer Once
Every regular client at Juvenelle had a first visit. Many of them tell us they wish they'd come sooner but felt unsure about the process. That uncertainty is completely normal, and it disappears the moment you walk in.
A good spa experience isn't about luxury or indulgence. It's about taking an hour out of your week to let someone take care of you — professionally, comfortably, and without any expectation that you already know how it works. That's what we're here for.
